Our Beliefs

Edgar Community Church is a Gospel-centered Christian church that believes that Jesus is God’s Son and the Bible is God’s Word.

What is the Gospel?

Just as there are laws that govern the physical universe, so are there spiritual laws that govern your relationship with God.

God loves.

God loves you and created you to know Him personally.

“For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish, but have eternal life.” John 3:16

“Now this is eternal life: that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent.” John 17:3

What prevents us from knowing God personally?

Sin is our problem.

All of us sin.

“For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” Romans 3:23

We are all created to have a relationship with God. But because of our stubborn self-will, we chose to go our own independent way and our connection with God was broken.  This self-will, characterized by an attitude of active rebellion or passive indifference, is evidence of what the Bible calls “sin.”

Your sin separates you from God.

“For the wages of sin is death.” Romans 6:23

How do we bridge this separation?

Jesus saves.

Jesus is the only way out of our sin problem.

He died in your place.

“But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.”  Romans 5:8

He rose from the dead.

“...Christ died for our sins…He was buried….He was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures….He appeared to Peter and then to the Twelve. After that, he appeared to more than five hundred….” 1 Corinthians 15:3-6

Jesus is the only way to God.

“Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” John 14:6

We need to receive Jesus.

We must personally receive Jesus as Savior.  Then we experience God’s love and plan for our lives.

“Yet to all who did receive him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God.”  John 1:12

We must receive Jesus through faith.

“For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God — not by works, so that no one can boast.” Ephesians 2:8-9

We experience a new life when we receive Jesus by personal invitation.

“Here I am! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with that person, and they with me.” Revelation 3:20

How do we receive Jesus by personal invitation?

Receiving Jesus involves turning to God from self (repentance) and trusting Jesus to come into our lives to forgive our sins and to make us the kind of people He wants us to be.  Just to agree intellectually that Jesus Christ is the Son of God and that He died on the cross for our sins is not enough.  Nor is it enough to have an emotional experience.  We receive Jesus Christ by faith, as an act of our will.

Basic Church Tenants

The Bible

he Bible is the infallible word of God and is our instruction for living. The Scriptures, both the Old and New Testaments, are verbally inspired of God and are the revelation of God to man. 2 Timothy 3:16

One True God

The one true God has revealed Himself as the eternally self-existent "I AM," the Creator of heaven and earth and the Redeemer of mankind. He has further revealed Himself as embodying the principles of relationship and association as Father, Son and Holy Spirit.  Matthew 28:19

Salvation

Our only hope of a relationship with God is through the shed blood of Jesus Christ. We confess our sin, repent (turn away from it), and believe that He is Lord. Romans 3:23-24

Sanctification

We are all moving forward on a journey to Christ-centered wholeness. We're not perfect, however; we seek a relationship with God and to be transformed by the Holy Spirit. We're in the process of being made holy. John 17:16-18

Water Baptism

The ordinance of baptism by immersion is commanded by the Scriptures.  All who repent and believe in Christ as Savior and Lord are to be baptized.  Thus they declare to the world that they have died with Christ and that they also have been raised with Him to walk in the newness of life. Matthew 28:19, Mark 16:16, Acts 10:47-48, Romans 6:4

Child Dedication

A child dedication is when parents/guardians make a commitment before the Lord to raise their child according to God’s Word.  Parents are choosing to help their child grow spiritually on their journey with God. Proverbs 22:6

Communion

The Lord’s Supper, consisting of the elements - bread and the fruit of the vine - is the symbol expressing our sharing the divine nature of our Lord Jesus Christ (2 Peter 1:4), a memorial of his suffering and death (1 Corinthians 11:26), a prophecy of His second coming (1 Corinthians 11:26), and is enjoined on all believers ‘till He come!’.
